* * *

As the wonderful afternoon wound down, Jess hated to see it end. The highlight had been when her dad had pulled Alex aside to show her the features of his new John Deere lawnmower. To her credit, Alex had been a good sport, listening with interest as her dad pointed out its four-wheel steering. And her mom had treated Alex as if she were a long-lost daughter, constantly offering either more food or refills on her drink. Even Tim had joined in by drumming up a bit of rivalry between Alex’s alma mater, Michigan State, and his, University of Michigan. All in all, it had been a great success.

They finally made their goodbyes, everyone seeming reluctant for the afternoon to come to a close. Facing each other beside their cars, Alex shuffled from one foot to the other. “I had a great time. Thanks for inviting me.”

Jess looked up into her face. “So did I. Thanks for coming.”

The moment drew out. Jess swallowed. She could feel her heartbeat race. Slowly, she licked her lips.

“Do you—” They both spoke at once.

They quickly looked at each other. “You go—” Again, they spoke the exact same words at the exact same time.

They burst out laughing. It had been a long time since Jess had felt that relaxed and free around someone. Even with Terra, God bless her, the best friend she could ever want, she never felt as comfortable around her as she did with Alex. Finally, she wiped away the dampness from the corners of her eyes. “I was just going to ask—”

“Do you want to do something?” Alex jumped right in.

That had been exactly what she was about to ask. “Yeah, do you want to do something? I mean, you don’t have to or anything. I was just asking…if you weren’t…”

“I’d love to.” Alex leaned down and gently laid her hand on Jess’s arm. “What do you have in mind?”

Alex’s hand against her skin burned like a hot coal from the barbecue. In stark contrast to the warmth of Alex’s touch, shivers ran up Jess’s arm and throughout her body. She stared up at Alex. Whatever thoughts had been in her head were long gone. All she could do was continue to stare, slowly losing herself in Alex’s deep blue eyes while her mouth worked unsuccessfully to form words. Finally, she settled on “Do you want to come back to my place and maybe grab some coffee?” She immediately winced. How lame was that?

Alex cocked her head to the side. “I don’t know. It might be a bit late for coffee…”

Jess felt her shoulders drop. Not only had she chosen the worst pickup line in the world, Alex didn’t even want coffee.

Seeing Jess’s crestfallen look, Alex smiled. “…but I would love to come back to your place. Just no coffee.”

Jess suddenly perked up. If she weren’t in a wheelchair, she would probably have jumped up and down. Alex was coming back to her place. She didn’t have a clue what they would do, but Alex was coming back to her place.
